ABOUT THIS 3D FIGURINE

The notable fire drake of the Lonely Mountain or the last great dragon to exist is an essential part of any Middle-earth universe fan’s 3D printed collection. When choosing the setting to depict his Smaug the Golden figurine in, the author of the dragon for 3D printing most likely was drawing inspiration from the original illustration provided by J.R.R. Tolkien titled “Conversation with Smaug”. The dragon is pictured sprawled on the wealth of the inestimable hoard in the depth of his mountain lair. The Hobbit film trilogy, without doubt, did greatly facilitate the 3D artist’s creative process but nevertheless, the figurine's sculpting took its author 125 hours in total. One can suppose that the Smaug 3D printing figurine shows the beast a mere seconds after being awakened from his slumber by the group of curious Dwarves who had the audacity to claim the ancient treasure from the dragon. Smaug the Chiefest and Greatest of Calamities, as Bilbo once addressed the dragon, turned out to be much larger than the Dwarves had expected and just as greedy as one may assume. The way the Smaug for 3D printing is towering above his great treasures proves that he has no intention to let his guard down - the Lonely Mountain’s wealth belongs solely to its rightful possessor, the King under the Mountain.

ADAPTATION FOR 3D PRINTING

Smaug the Golden 3D printing figurine is a static assembly model and its moderation and adaptation for different types of 3D printers took Gambody team 46 hours in total. The model’s cutting was chosen by our team to minimise the amount of filament needed for generated support and some of the parts were hollowed out for you to save the resin. The figurine was divided into as many assembly parts as needed to fit even the smallest 3D printers' build plates and for you to nevertheless receive a large dragon after the assembly. The Smaug's head was split up for you to print the jaws preserving all the teeth's finest details. All the assembly parts are provided in STL files in recommended positions that were worked out so to ensure the smoothness of the details’ surfaces after printing and that the 3D printing beginners won't face difficulties when placing the parts on a build plate. All the parts have special connecting elements for you to assemble the figurine in the easiest way possible and there are locks provided to connect the details if you don’t want to glue the parts. It is especially convenient for those who are going to paint the model.

The figurine is saved in STL files, a format supported by most 3D printers. All STL files for 3D printing have been checked in Netfabb and no errors were shown.

The model's scale was calculated from the dragon's actual length that is 130000 mm. The 3D printing figurine's chosen scale is 1/100 for the FFF/FDM version and 1/200 for the DLP/SLA/SLS versions.

Below you can find printing recommendations for Cura, Bambu Lab, Simplify3D, Slic3r and PrusaSlicer software.

Disclaimer: The following printing settings are a recommendation, not an obligation. The parameters can vary depending on the peculiarities of your 3D printer, the material you use, and especially the particular assembly part you are working with. Each part that any model comprises often needs preliminary review, and you are free to tweak the settings the way you find suitable.

Note:

You can scale up the model (downscaling for FFF/FDM 3D printers is not recommended!);

All connectors should be printed at 100% Infill.
