A Brief History of eSports [Infographic]

With an evolution in technology, gaming has evolved to become more fun, thrilling and money-making as well.

With the introduction of eSports, also known as electronic sports, the gaming industry has seen a rapid increase in the number of people playing online. Playing games, which was once considered to be a waste of time by many, is now a source of earning as new professional players continue to come in every day.

The first known video competition took place on the 19th of October 1972 at Stanford University for a game named Spacewar which featured two spaceships engaged in a dogfight while navigating in the gravity well of a star. This was later followed by Space Invaders Championship which was held by Atari in 1980 which was a large-scale video game competition with over 10000 participants across the United States.

It was after 1990 that many online video games got recognition and benefited from increasing internet connectivity. Today, innumerable online tournaments like Counter-Strike, League of Legends, Dota 2, Call of Duty, League of Legends are being held each year with over thousands of professional players and teams participating in each tournament.
