ABOUT THIS 3D MODEL

K9 Mark I is a robot dog that was first introduced in 1977 in the story 'The Invisible Enemy' of the legendary British Sci-Fi TV series Doctor Who. While working on the asteroid, Professor Frederick Marius invented the first K9 and equipped the robot with such state-of-the-art technologies as intraresponsive brain app, a vision and voice box and scanning antennas to keep him company far from home. Later on, Professor Marius offered the fourth Doctor and Leela the K9 to accompany the pair in their travel and thus the robot dog was taken aboard the TARDIS. K9 was basically intended as a one-off character but immediately won such immense popularity with the Time Lord adventure’s fans that was made a regular Doctor’s companion. The author of the K9 Mark I for 3D printing also couldn’t resist the robot’s charms given its encyclopaedic knowledge and vast computer intelligence and spent 30 hours in total to design the action model of the well-liked K9 mechanic dog. A lot of K9 design's assembly parts are articulated which doubles the assembly and displaying fun for all the Doctor Who enthusiasts.

ADAPTATION FOR 3D PRINTING

K9 Mark I model for 3D printing is an articulated assembly model and its moderation and adaptation for different types of 3D printers took Gambody team 3 hours in total. The model’s chosen cutting was aimed at minimisation of the amount of filament needed for generated support. All the assembly parts are provided in STL files in recommended positions that were worked out so to ensure the smoothness of the details’ surfaces after printing and that the 3D printing beginners won't face difficulties when placing the parts on a build plate. For you to receive the cleanest printing result possible all the fine details the model is comprised of, namely the robot’s nose, radar, ears, collar, grips and tail are provided as separate STL files. The robot dog’s movable head, opening side access panel and rotating tail allow you to display the Doctor’s companion in different kind of scenarios. Four wheels can be easily assembled with the pair of bars that ensure the K9’s smooth movement.

The model is saved in STL files, a format supported by most 3D printers. All STL files for 3D printing have been checked in Netfabb and no errors were shown.

The model's scale was calculated from the K9's actual height that is 900 mm. The 3D printing model's chosen scale is 1/8 for the FFF/FDM version and 1/16 for the DLP/SLA/SLS versions.

VERSIONS' SPECIFICATIONS

FFF/FDM version features:
- Contains 23 parts;
- A printed model is 113 mm tall, 56 mm wide, 158 mm deep;
- Assembly kit includes locks to connect the parts without glue. One lock 23_Ge_lock_10H_x9 needs to be printed 9 times;
- Made with four rotating wheels that ensure the K9's movement;
- The K9's head is movable;
- The side access panel can be opened or removed to reveal the parts of the robot's internal mechanisms; 
- All parts are divided in such a way that you will print them with the smallest number of support structures.

DLP/SLA version features:
- Contains 6 parts;
- A printed model is 57 mm tall, 28 mm wide, 79 mm deep;
- The side access panel can be opened or removed to reveal the parts of the robot's internal mechanisms;
- The K9's head is movable;
- All parts are divided in such a way to fit the build plates and to ensure that support structures are generated where needed.

SLS version features:
- Made as a solid one-piece model; 
- A printed model is 57 mm tall, 28 mm wide, 79 mm deep;
- Contains 3 parts - a one-piece model with a) the side access panel closed, b) opened, c) removed.
