ABOUT THIS 3D MODEL

Icarus, officially known as Liberty 1, is the dart-like spacecraft of the ANSA fleet and the star of the Planet of the Apes franchise. Under the command of Colonel George Taylor Icarus travelled at nearly the speed of light across the universe to crash land into a lake on an unknown planet. Nicknamed in honour of the tragic Greek hero, the jewel of the ANSA fleet fell from the sky into a stagnant salt water to slowly sink beneath the waves. The first few minutes of the original 1968 "Planet of the Apes" film actually happen to be the very first representation of an interstellar mission! So there is no wonder that the crash-landing of the winged chariot is considered to be such an iconic scene among the starships enthusiasts. Our talented contributing 3D artist was no exception! The author of the Icarus model for 3D printing reportedly spent circa 170 hours to live up to the image of the mysterious spacecraft. The 3D printing Liberty 1 is long and sleek, with its sharp nose-cone, sweeping lines and elegant design. The 3D artist made sure to pay close attention to all the decals, flags and engravings that adorn the beautiful ANSA spacecraft, as well as to the interior of the ship, in order for your Icarus project to be as precise as possible. The cherry on the cake, though, are the platform options that the Icarus model comes with! The first variant of the model’s base is a launch platform, equipped with a set of boarding stairs that helps you display the ship vertically, as if readying for departure. The other platform option imitates the surface of the lake that Icarus splashed down into in that iconic and well-loved scene. Due to the year of its introduction, Icarus happens to be the first spaceship of many fans’ childhood, stirring the imaginations of future craft enthusiasts from the early age. Today the legendary Icarus becomes closer than ever - it is a 3D printer away!

ADAPTATION FOR 3D PRINTING

Icarus for 3D printing is a static assembly model and its moderation and adaptation for different types of 3D printers took Gambody team 50 hours in total. For you to receive the cleanest 3D printing result possible and to minimize the amount of filament needed for generated support the spacecraft model was divided into many assembly parts, e.g. its rear hatchway, engine thrusters, crew seats, reaction control jets, glide wings, etc. are provided as separate STL files. The windows on the viewports are also provided as separate files for you to print them using transparent filament or access the highly detailed interior of the cabin. There can also be found special tunnels throughout the body of the Icarus that were designed by our team for you to easily introduce LED wiring for illumination of the re-entry engines. For you to display the Icarus model among your Space Ships collection there are two platform options provided, a launch platform, and the one to recreate the lake crash-landing scene. All assembly parts are provided in STL files in recommended positions that were worked out in order to ensure the smoothness of the details’ surfaces after printing and that the 3D printing beginners won't face difficulties when placing the parts on a build plate. When downloading any model's file you will also receive "Assembly Manual" for FFF/FDM 1.0 and DLP/SLA/SLS 1.0 versions in PDF format. We highly recommend that you get acquainted with the “Assembly video” and "Assembly Manual" before getting down to the Icarus model.

The model is saved in STL files, a format supported by most 3D printers. All STL files for 3D printing have been checked in Netfabb and no errors were shown.

The model's scale was calculated from the actual length of the Icarus that is 13260 mm. The 3D printing model's chosen scale is 1/34 for FFF/FDM version and 1/68 for DLP/SLA/SLS version.

VERSIONS' SPECIFICATIONS

Below you can find printing recommendations for CuraSimplify3D and Slic3r software.

Cura printing recommendations:

These are basic settings that were tested in Cura 4.8.0 slicer.

The test models were printed on Ultimaker 2, Creality Ender 3, Creality CR-10S Pro V2, Anycubic I3 Mega, Anycubic I3 MegaS 3D printers with PLA and PETG filaments.

Disclaimer: The following printing settings are a recommendation, not an obligation. The parameters can vary depending on the peculiarities of your 3D printer, the material you use and especially the particular assembly part at hand. Each part that any model comprises often needs preliminary review and you are free to tweak the settings the way you find suitable.

Note:
- You can scale up the model (downscaling is not recommended!);
- All connectors should be printed at 100% Infill;
- For all parts of locks (“ge_lock” in “Source files”) you need to change "Brim" type to "Skirt" in Build Plate Adhesion section.
